China develops breakthrough high quality wheat

A new high-quality wheat strain called "Xiaoyan 81" has been developed in China, reports say. It has a per mu (equals 1/15 hectare) yield of 565 kg with the highest yield reaching 617 kg.

The strain also has a volumetric weight of 800 g/litre and protein content of about 17 percent, sometimes as high as 18.8 percent. Its wet gluten content is about 40 percent, sometimes as high as 46 percent, and thus its high quality.

The "Xiaoyan 81" strain is being regionally tested for wheat strain comparison in the three provinces of Hebei, Shandong and Shaanxi. It is under test observation in Henan province for strain introduction.
