Brazilian beef exports jump in May
Beef exported from Brazil totalled US$447 million in May 2010, a growth of 38% compared to May 2009, while shipments amounted to 175,000 tonnes, a rise of 11% on-year.
Â
Russia was the main buyer of raw beef, with imports of 37,000 tonnes in May and revenues of US$92 million. Iran came second, with revenues of US$69 million and 26,000 tonnes. The UK was the main market for industrialised beef in the month, with US$12 million in revenues and 10,000 tonnes in volume.
Â
The contributing factors to the surge in the country's beef exports include recovery of the global economy, greater demand for beef in the main import markets, and hardship faced by Brazilian competitors, analysts said.

From January to May, exports in the sector reached US$1.9 billion, marking a growth of 24% over the same period last year. In terms of volume, the increase was 3%, with 794,000 tonnes shipped.
