First quarter 2004 statistical figures released by the Department of Statistics of Guangdong province showed that the province produced 1.0357 million tons of meat products, representing a quarter-on-quarter increase of 0.1%.

     

The 9.6803 million pigs slaughtered in Guangdong during the first quarter this year yielded 0.6776 million tons of pork, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same period last year.

 

A total of 229.7673 million poultry were slaughtered in Guangdong, resulting in a yield of 0.3296 million tons of poultry meat. These figures represent a decline of 2.8% and 2.9% respectively compared to the same period last year.

 

Over the same period, 106,300 heads of beef cattle were sent to the abattoir in Guangdong province, yielding 11,512 tons of beef. These figures were 0.7% and 0.5% higher than corresponding figures for the same period last year.   

 

Mutton production in Guangdong also showed positive growth for the first three months of this year. A total of 78,300 meat goats were slaughtered, resulting in a yield of 1,511 tons of mutton. These figures were 6.2% and 5.1% higher than last year's figures over the same period.

 

In the first quarter, Guangdong produced 25,348 tons of milk from dairy cows, an increase of 2.3% over the same period last year.
