Taiwan to separate meat permits on re-entry of US ractopamine-fed beef

Taiwan is intending to separate permits for pork and beef imports, if US ractopamine-fed beef is allowed into the country.

Separate permits are only a part of a larger proposal for new guidelines: beef imports will be clearly labelled, a restriction on internal organ import, and a standard for allowable ractopamine in beef.

The Obama administration has been under pressure by US lawmakers who have been urging the government to pursue a solution that would allow both beef and pork imports containing ractopamine.

It is unknown how domestic pig farmers, who were prevented from using ractopamine in feed 10 years ago, are reacting to the news.
