Vietnam aims 42-percent increase in livestock production by 2020

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said the country's livestock industry has aimed to increase production by 42 percent by 2020, the Vietnam News reported Friday (June 12).

MARD deputy head of the husbandry department Nguyen Xuan Duong said the target included producing 5.5 million tonnes of meat, 14 billion eggs and more than one million tonnes of milk by 2020.

By then, pigs, chicken and diary cattle populations were expected to increase by 2 percent, 5 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Duong said that to achieve these targets, the sector would have to modernise its production methods, shifting from household-based breeding to industrial farms.

He also suggested that the sector map out a master plan for constructing slaughterhouses and meat processing plants with modern technology in tandem with the adoption of commercial livestock farming.

According to MARD, Vietnam's livestock sector grew at more than 8.4 percent a year during the 2001-2008 periods, while the proportion of livestock products in the agriculture sector in 2008 was 24.1 percent.
