Syria bans Indian meat over substandard quality

Syria said it has banned import of meat from India as its quality was not up to the global standards.

''We have stopped it temporarily just to find out and coordinate with India to review all the measures," Syrian Economy and Trade Minister Lamia Mari Aasi said Friday (Jun 11).

However, she assured the Indian industry delegation of CII, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma that officials of the two countries would be meeting shortly to sort out the issue.

Syria had banned Indian bovine meat about a month ago.

India's exports of bovine and frozen meat to Syria were estimated at US$4.28 million in 2008-09.
