Russia looks at growing livestock exports
Speaking at a Congress of the Russian Agro-Industrial Union in Moscow, First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov signalled his country's readiness to work at boosting livestock exports.
With its venison exports already in place, Russia is mulling over the supplying of turkey meat to Middle East countries in the foreseeable future, Zubkov said. He was echoed by State Duma Deputy Victor Semyonov, who maintained that the next few years will see Russia's further expansion in the world agricultural market, something that he said is already starting to take place.
With its domestic agricultural production continuing to thrive, Russia understandably indicates its intent to start dealing with its livestock exports in the next four years, Semyonov said, citing chicken, turkey and pork. It should be admitted, however, that turkey production is yet to be developed in Russia, Semyonov added.
Given Zubkov's pledge to soon provide Middle East states with turkey meat, analysts do not rule the creation of more turkey farms in Russia in the coming years. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik said that for chicken and pork, an import substitution stage will be finalised in Russia by 2013.
