Peru terminates Canadian beef ban

Canadian government ministers said on Tuesday (June 12) that Peru has lowered trade restrictions on imported Canadian beef ending the nine-year ban.

Peru will accept Canadian bone-in beef from cattle below 30 months of age, boneless beef from all ages of cattle, and offal, said Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast.

Peru had banned Canadian beef since 2003 after the discovery of cattle with mad cow disease.

Industry group Canada Beef Inc estimates that Peru could import up to CAD2 million (US$1.9 million) worth of beef annually.
