Vietnam's seafood companies tap overseas markets

Vietnam's South Ha Tinh Seaproduct Import and Export (Shatico) and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Seafoods Processing Co. (Basefood) have tapped on foreign consumers such as Italy and Japan.

Vietnam's Shatico has exported its first consignment of squid to Italy at the beginning of May, said Dang Sy Trien, the company director.

In April and May this year, Shatico exported 70 tonnes of seafood to Japan and Italy.

Meanwhile, Basefood also exported about 1,000 tonnes of seafood products, worth US$2.8 million to Japan, South Korea and Egypt in May.

Tran Van Dung, Basefood director, said that in May, the mini pouched dried trevally, Basefood's latest product, received positive responses from the Russian market.

Basefood further plans to expand its markets for dried seafood to Ukraine and Belarus.
