Philippine officials seize double-dead chicken in Pasay
Philippine officials confirmed Thursday (June 11, 2008) that some 200 kilogrammes of double dead chicken were seized in Pasay City.
Double-dead refers to carcasses of food animals that are killed by accident or disease then butchered to be sold as fresh.
Ronaldo Benasor, city veterinarian, said the raid followed a whole month of surveillance.
Benasor said that the double-dead meat was sold at PHP70 (US$1.58) per kg, much lower than the prevailing market price for chicken in the Philippines.
The official said they have yet to determine where the double-dead meat came from.
Last year, hundreds of kilos of double-dead pork were also seized from meat dealers at the city's public market.
