US beef exports up, pork exports stable while broiler exports fall
US beef exports for the first four months of the year rose close to 19 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Cumulative USDA livestock meat trade released Jun 11 (Monday).
Beef exports rose to 373,383 tonnes 313,442 tonnes .
Beef exports to Japan, who used to be one of the biggest customers of US beef, quadrupled over the period from 9,634 tonnes the first four months of 2006 to 37,812 tonnes the same period this year.
While exports to Canada increased significantly ( 38 percent, from 51,729 tonnes to 71,764 tonnes) during the period, exports to Mexico fell 10 percent from 205,668 tonnes to 183,217 tonnes.
Meanwhile, pork exports during the period remained largely stable, dropping 0.9 percent from 1.026 million tonnes last year to 1.016 million tonnes.
Pork exports to Japan, the largest customer, gained 12 percent on-year, rising from 332,434 tonnes to 373,884 tonnes whereas pork exports to Mexico, the second largest customer of US pork, fell 24 percent from 214,435 tonnes to 162,221 tonnes.
Pork exports to China increased 32 percent to 54, 701 tonnes while that to Taiwan fell 46 percent to 15,270 tonnes.
US broiler exports was down 4.6 percent from 1.78 million tonnes to 1.70 million tonnes.
A steep drop in exports to Russia ( from 513,237 tonnes to 454,269 tonnes) was more than offset by a significant increase to the CIS states outside Russia ( from 87,801 tonnes to 141,556 tonnes) and the Baltic countries (from 5,733 tonnes to 111,8414 tonnes). However, it still could not cover the steep drop from the Eastern European countries, where exports fell from 82,506 tonnes to just 2,290 tonnes.
