Fonterra, Stonyfield Farm work on sustainability

New Zealand's Fonterra and Stonyfield Farm in the US are working towards a more sustainable approach through strategies such as reducing packaging wastes or cow burps.

US-based Stonyfield Farm has an ongoing pilot project focusing on naturally influencing cows digestion through livestock feed, and it is improving both product quality and carbon footprints.

Stonyfield said it has fed cows at 15 Vermont Organic Valley farms supplying its operations with diets high in natural omega-3 sources like flax and grasses, a process the company said could reduce saturated fats in milk and rebalances a cow's main stomach.

Fonterra said it is on track to reuse 90 percent of waste generated from its operations over the past 12 months, according to a new report.

By redesigning its operations around using more recyclable materials as well as greater production efficiency, Fonterra has posted an additional eight to nine percent improvement in recycling waste.
