Canada funds two new livestock research projects

The Canadian government and private industry are handing out nearly CAD1 million (US$916,323) for two new research projects on livestock.

The Canadian Cattleman's Association will manage the first project, which is an economic, social and environmental assessment of the Canadian beef industry. The association will help outline beneficial management practices that need improvement and shape future research and policy.

The second project, which will focus on development of easy-to-use genomic selection tools for breed improvement, will be managed by the Canadian Beef Breeds Council.

"Strengthening the agriculture research capacity in Saskatchewan supports innovation for the long-term profitability and stability of producers," said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "Investment in these projects is a direct response to the needs identified by industry and will help producers remain a key contributor to the Canadian economy."
