Canada lifts BC cattle quarantine
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has lifted quarantines from two British Columbian (BC) farms after tests for a bacterial disease came back negative and is working to convince US officials to lift their restrictions on cattle imports.
The US said BC cattle tested positive in May for a bacterial disease called brucellosis, which causes spontaneous abortions in cows, and imposed restrictions on accepting certain cattle and bison until they've tested negative.
Canadian officials said new tests show that suspected cases of brucellosis appear to have been caused by another type of bacteria that's known to create false-positive results.
