EU proposes use of 2 genetically modified corn varieties
The European Commission Friday (Jun 8) proposed authorising the import and processing of two genetically modified corn varieties.
The corn could be used for food and cattle feed but not for cultivation, it said.
The clearance would be valid for 10 years and any products derived from the GM maize would be subject to strict labelling and traceability rules.
The proposals concerned two hybrid maize types--1507xNK603 and NK603 x MON810. Both have been approved by the European Food Safety Authority.
The commission will now submit the proposal to the council for approval by national governments.
