Brazil's grain crop seen to fall 7.5 percent in 2009
Brazil's grain crop will total 135 million tonnes in 2009, down 7.5 percent on-year, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Monday (Jun 8).

Brazil's planted area will total 47.2 million hectares, with soy area up 2.1 percent and corn area down 3.7 percent, said IBGE.

Brazil's southern region will have the largest grain crop this year at 54 million tonnes, down 11.9 percent from 2008. The mid western region will have the second largest crop at 48 million tonnes, down 5.4 percent from 2008, followed by the southeastern region with 16.9 million tonnes, down 4.2 percent from 2008.

The northeastern region's grain crop will drop 1.3 percent on-year to 12.3 million tonnes in 2009, while the northern region's crop will drop 1.5 percent to 3.7 million tonnes.

Production falls are seen in soy by 4.5 percent, corn at 13.8 percent, cotton at 24.3 percent and wheat at 2.9 percent.
