Mexican beef to compete for South Korea market share
Mexican beef is virtually unknown to South Korean consumers but Mexico is confident of a market growth through promoting and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the beef.
Mexico began exporting mostly minced meat to South Korea in 2004 and occupies only more than 2 percent of the South Korean beef market.
Mexican ambassador Leandro Arellano said the demand for Mexican beef and pork is growing and South Korean importers have been reassured of Mexican beef's safety and cleanliness.
It is expected that competition will toughen once US beef makes it to the South Korean shelves, but Arellano is confident that Mexican beef will rise to the competition and their market share will grow.
The Mexican minister of agriculture and the Mexican Beef Exporters Association had visited South Korea to promote their product and the association would return in September to further their talks with importers and to organise promotional events.
The association will also be working to trademark their products as "Mexican Beef" for identification purposes.
