Price guarantee disperses Thai shrimp farmers' blockage

Protesting shrimp farmers in Thailand's six southern provinces dispersed after the government produced a short-term plan to improve shrimp prices.

Hundreds of shrimp farmers had blocked a lane of the Tinasulanond bridge in Songkhla province as they demanded the government to facilitate solutions to handle declining shrimp prices.

The government in return had promised to guarantee shrimp price at THB 120 (US$3.6) per kg. The short-term price guarantee measure for 10,000 tonnes of shrimps nationwide would take effect within 15 days.

Yanyong Phuangrach, director general of the Internal Trade Department, said the guaranteed amount of assistance would be sufficient to alleviate the shrimp price crisis at the moment.
