Australian pork import ban may have extensive effects

Australian Pork Limited's latest bid to block pork imports from countries affected by Post Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) could have extensive repercussions.

Canada Pork International has warned that the Australian court's favourable ruling could force the Australian government to rethink all import risk assessment procedures not only for pork but also all other products.

Besides the fact that zero-risk is unrealistic under current international trade conditions and obligations, small manufacturers that are highly dependent on imports may face supply shortage problems.

The Australian government has announced it will appeal the court ruling and take appropriate action to ensure that the border remains open pending the appeal outcome.
