Russia frees hog meat imports from Brazilian state

Meat processing plants of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, will be authorised by the government of Russia to export hog meat to that country, said the Russian minister of agriculture Reinhold Stephanes.

Russians embargoed in 2005 the purchase of Brazilian meat due to a possible focus of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), in which resulted in losses of US$1.3 billion.

The embargo ended in 2007 but the plants were not accredited to export hog meat, said the Associacao Brasileira da Industria Produtora e Exportadora de Carne Suina (Abipcs).
