Egypt orders "contaminated" Russian wheat sent back

Egypt's public prosecutor ordered on Sunday (June 7) the return of a shipment of Russian wheat impounded last month on health grounds, a judicial source said.

The decision to ship back the 52,000 tonnes of wheat, worth US$9.6 million, came after an investigation found the grain was contaminated with insects and unspecified heavy metals, the source said.

The public prosecutor also demanded a refund for the shipment.

In the second shipment of Russian wheat held up in May on health grounds, the public prosecutor's office had ordered the load quarantined for inspection at an Egyptian port after a lawmaker filed a complaint.
