Canadian university launches environmental project for swine production
Researchers from the University of Manitoba, Canada, have commenced on a new study by formulating a diet that will lower the phosphorus content of manure in an attempt to lessen the environmental impact of pig production.
The University's Department of Animal Science will conduct the first phase on the animal nutrition studies while the second phase will be taken by the Department of Soil Science on the impact of the urine and manure on the soil.
The project is expected to take two years.
Researchers believe the success of the project in reducing phosphorous will be of enormous benefit in terms of phosphorus loading to the soil and ultimately water quality.
