EU proposes higher import quota for cold-water shrimp
The European Commission has proposed a 20,000-tonne EU import quota for cold-water shrimp.
Last year, the bloc's autonomous tariff rate quota (ATRQ) for shrimp which can be imported for further processing was only 7,000 tonnes, and 3,000 tonnes were added in end-2006.
Shrimp imported within and outside the ATRQ were subject to a 6 percent and 20 percent tariff respectively. The tariff rates apply to both cooked and peeled shrimp.
Additionally, the European Commission has decided that modified atmosphere packs would qualify as a product for further processing.
