English beef off to a strong start as exports resume

English beef exports have re-started strongly and would likely achieve the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) forecast for the first year of 30,000 tonnes, according to the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX).

English beef is making inroads into the French, Italian, Greek and Dutch markets, thanks to various promotional programmes by EBLEX and its appearances in trade shows. More of such events are being planned to fuel interest in British beef.

Richard Ali, EBLEX Chief Executive, said it was pleasing to see the level of acceptance English beef has gained in Europe.

Ali adds that the organisation would capitalise on an importer/exporter convention in Paris on Jun 7 to set up new business contacts.

Missions inviting potential buyers to witness British beef production firsthand have also been well received.

In 1995, before export restrictions were placed on British beef in 1996 due to mad cow disease, Britain exported 274,000 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef.

Britain's largest customers were France, Italy, South Africa and the Netherlands.
