During the first quarter of 2004, China's beef and mutton production had maintained an upward momentum, with a steady growth observed in animal inventory and slaughtered stock.
Prices for beef and mutton had continued to rise during the first quarter, with the scale of price increase for beef higher than that of mutton. While the import and export volumes of beef products dropped, the import and export values increased. Significant growth was recorded for both import and export of mutton products. The import volume was higher than that of export, resulting in an adverse balance of trade.
Between January and February of 2004, China exported 4,055.85 tons of beef products, a year-on-year drop of 2.53%. Export totaled US$12.9437 million, an increase of 1.11% compared with the previous year. China imported 3,574 tons of beef products, a year-on-year drop of 54.39%. Imports totaled US$30.3944 million, up 1.06% from the year before.
Between January and February 2004, China exported US$4.355 million of mutton, showing a 1.43 times year-on-year increase. US$7.2365 million worth of mutton was imported, registering a 62.41% year-on-year increase. There is a trade surplus of US$2.8815 million.
