Vietnam's January-May aquaculture exports up 9.8%

Vietnam's aquaculture export value in May reached US$500 million, increasing the total export value of January-May to US$2.3 billion, up 9.8% against the same period last year, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Of the aquaculture exports, shrimps have emerged as the key export product, said MARD.

Japan is the largest market for Vietnam's shrimp, accounting for 26.9%, followed by the US with the revenue of US $150 million, up 4%.

Australia is also the potential market for Vietnamese shrimp with the growth rate of 70%, becoming the 6th largest importer of Vietnam's shrimp.

Meanwhile, shrimp exports to key European markets like UK, France and Germany fell sharply in 2011 because of high their high technical and hygienic requirements.

At present, the price of common tiger prawn at the Mekong Delta has been increasing thanks to businesses' strong demand.
