Rains to hit China's major grain areas

The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) warned Wednesday (June 4, 2008) that rain would adversely affect harvest in the country's major grain producing regions.

The CMA said that areas to be affected include the southern part of Gansu, the northern part of Shaanxi and southern Shandong.

Furthermore, the bureau said that thunderstorms and heavy wind may dislodge wheat in the areas.

Local departments in the affected areas were urged to make proper preparation for the harvests and to prevent grain from going moldy.

Chinese farmers were also advised against planting and reaping in thunderstorm weather for safety considerations.
