Philippine poultry production slightly improves in Q1

The Philippine poultry industry expanded in the first quarter by 4 percent valued at PHP12 billion, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) reported.

The BAS said that a more robust chicken production has driven the growth in the poultry sector by 4.6 percent, valued at PHP9.2 billion.

The total volume of chicken produced in the quarter reached 338,480 tonnes from last year's 323,460 tonnes.

The country's chicken egg production also grew by almost 4.9 percent to PHP2.492 billion from PHP2.375 billion last year.

The BAS reported that major chicken egg producing regions in Luzon gained higher inventory of layers and better egg-laying efficiency ratio.

Meanwhile, there was no change from last year's duck meat production of 11,600 tonnes valued at PHP398,000.

Philippines' poultry output grew by a mere 0.31 percent in 2007 from 0.37 percent contraction in 2006 due to higher feed costs.
