Ukraine denies competition with Russia in world grain trade

Ukraine and Russia are not rivals in the world grain market, Vladimir Lapa, head of Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business (UCAB) said.

Lapa said that large Russian exporters work in the Ukrainian market as well as in other countries.

It is important that grain shipments from these two countries can be partially interchanged, so that consolidated pool can be used, Lapa added.

Furthermore, the association looks on stronger partnership between Russia and Ukraine.

In May 2008, Ukraine's grain exports jumped to 857,000 tonnes from 308,200 in April, after the government cancelled export restrictions.

UkrAgroConsult agriculture consultancy said that the volume included 464,000 tonnes of corn, 140,000 tonnes of wheat and 250,000 of barley.
