Uruguayan beef exports rise by 10% in April

Uruguayan beef exports for January to April rise by 10% compared to the same period last year, to 83,101 tonnes, with a 6% on-year increase of exports during April, to 21,886 tonnes.

The increase in exports during the first four months of the year was underpinned by strong demand from Israel and the US, with shipments rising 74% and 40% on-year, respectively. The rise in overall exports was despite shipments to Russia declining 7% on the corresponding period last year.

Uruguay has the highest per head beef consumption level in the world at 77 kilogrammes per capita (FAO), but with a population of only 3.3 million people, it also exports 75% of total beef production.
