US may lose one quarter of its Russian poultry quota

Following agreement to lift Russia's ban on imports for poultry meat from the US, up to one quarter of the previous US quota may be offered to other countries, including India and Turkey.

The US may lose up to 25% of its Russian poultry quota, which will be re-distributed among other countries supplying poultry to Russia, the Russian industry and trade ministry said on June 2.

The US 2010 poultry quota will be cut from 600,000 tonnes to 450,000 tonnes.

The ministry said in a statement that its subcommittee on quotas and tariffs approved the proposal to import 150,000 tonnes, or 25% of the US quota, from any other state.

Russia and the US have been in talks on resuming supplies to Russia after new harsher sanitary requirements came into force from January 1, effectively banning imports of US poultry. The latest round of talks took place in Moscow in the beginning of March.

Russia's chief sanitary official, Gennady Onishchenko, said in late May that Russia and the US were close to reaching a solution to resume poultry supplies.

It is reported that Russia is currently considering Turkey and India as possible suppliers.
