Canadian shrimp processors shut down due to low demand
Seafood processors in Newfoundland and Labrador shut down shrimp operations on Tuesday (June 2), blaming the high Canadian dollar and poor demand for processed shrimp.
The Association of Seafood Producers, representing plants producing coldwater shrimp in Newfoundland and Labrador, called it an "unprecedented situation."
According to media reports, members of the association said they would not start producing shrimp again until the overall economic situation improves.
They blamed an unfavourable currency exchange and market factors, as well as high raw material prices.
