Argentina's wheat planting slowed by dryness, frost
Dry and windy conditions in some areas, combined with repeated frosts, slowed 2007/08 wheat planting this week, the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange said in it weekly crop report Friday (Jun 1).
However, soil moisture conditions were good in the southern region of Buenos Aires province due to showers this week, the exchange said.
Argentina's farmers have planted 15.3 percent of the 5.4 million hectares forecast for wheat in the 2007/08 season, 3 percentage points behind the pace at this time last year, according to the exchange.
Soy
As of Jun 1, farmers have harvested 95.2 percent of the soy crop.
Yields have averaged 3.01 tonnes per hectare, up 13.1 percent from last year. Soy production is estimated at 46.7 million tonnes by the exchange.
The US Department of Agriculture sees Argentina producing 45.5 million tonnes of soybeans this year, while the Agriculture Secretariat estimates 45.2 million tonnes.
Corn
Dry weather over the past week helped speed the corn harvest.
Farmers have harvested 77.3 percent of this year's corn crop, 7.5 percentage points behind last year's pace.
Yields from the 2006/07 crop are expected to total 8 tonnes per hectare, with total production of 22.5 million tonnes, according to the Exchange.
The Secretariat and the USDA forecast 22 million tonnes of corn coming from this year's crop.
