New Zealand favours imported pork over domestic product

As domestic pork prices fall due to a preference for imported pork, New Zealanders are encouraged to support domestic pork products otherwise they risk losing the industry.

Pig farmers are struggling from a drop in scheduled pork prices and public pressure on their farming systems. Costs of farming are rising as well.

Bacon retailer Michelle Fox said she noticed a number of piggeries close over the past few years and warns there will be more if the public does not show some support.

She believes imported pork should be levied, as 800 tonnes of pork is imported into New Zealand every week.

The Pork Industry Board said pig farmers are under a lot of pressure at the moment. Pork prices have fallen significantly over the past few months. Chief executive Sam McIvor said imported pork is set at prices below what New Zealand farmers can produce it for.
