Russia halts meat imports from Brazilian plants

Russia has suspended meat imports from a number of slaughterhouses in Brazil, including three plants owned by JBS S.A., the company confirmed.

At the same time, JBS S.A., the parent company of Greeley-based JBS USA, is joined by another Brazilian meat giant, Marfig Alimentos S.A., in downplaying the effects of the Brazilian government's decision last week to temporarily suspend beef exports to the US, according to reports.

JBS had not been informed of the reasons behind the suspension, but said that the financial impact from this issue was negligible, given that the company has 14 other plants in Brazil authorised to access the Russian market.

Russia apparently also halted purchases from three plants owned by Marfig and two owned by Frigorifico Riosulense. The suspension came after a Russian delegation of health inspectors visited 29 plants.

Meanwhile, Marfig announced it will supply the export demand of cooked beef, canned beef and beef jerky destined to the US through its units in Uruguay and Argentina.

The US has recalled and banned beef products from JBS earlier in May following USDA's detection of excess amounts of Ivermectin, an anti-parasitic drug used to de-worm live animals, in shipments from a JBS plant in Sao Paulo.
