Pakistan wheat consumption comes down due to higher prices
The annual consumption of wheat fell by 10% in Pakistan due to decreased purchasing power of the common man and higher prices, said World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director Wolfgang Herbinger.
He expressed these views at a Media Launch of ''State of food insecurity in Pakistan'', jointly organised by Sustainable Development Policy Institute, Word Food Programme and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) on Wednesday (June 2).
Wolfgang said that loss of purchasing power was one of the major factors behind four million tonnes carry-over stock of wheat this year and it was not because of any surplus. Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock, has said the government initiated several schemes for increasing food production and steps towards food security. He said that war against terror was having its toll on Pakistan, which caused many problems, one of which is food insecurity. He said the government believed in collective solutions and would like to have support of civil society, NGOs and masses.
Wolfgang said that apart from environmental degradations and other issues, drop in investment also marred our efforts to meet the challenge of food insecurity. He said the government wanted to promote farm mechanisation and in this regard they provided 10,000 tractors.
Wolfgang stressed the need for ensuring food security to the people. He also called for investing in new varieties of food species.
