Malaysia plans to remove price controls on chicken

Malaysia's government is planning to remove price controls on chicken to promote exports because production has outstripped demand, Bernama news agency reported Tuesday, quoting Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Abdul Samad.

Shahrir was quoted as saying the removal of controls will cover prices at all stages - farm, wholesale and retail. He did not provide further details.

Traders reported the ceiling price of ex-farm chickens breaking through the ceiling price of RM4.50 (US$1.39 ) to reach RM4.80 (US$1.48). Farmers have recently complained that they would be unable to sustain the ceiling price on account of high feed prices.
