Argentine soy output may beat forecast this year

Soy production in Argentina for 2009-10 could exceed the record forecast of 54.8 million tonnes, should weather conditions in the northeast improve to boost yields in the area, according to the country's grain exchange.

Argentina is expected to produce an additional 20 million tonnes of soy this year compared to 2009. Unstable weather conditions, including rainfall, have brought the harvest to a halt in parts of the northeast, while slowing it in others.

Despite the delays, the grain exchange has ruled out cutting its current forecast. Final total production this year could even be slightly higher than the estimate, once the harvest is resumed in parts of the northeast, it added.

Total soy production in the country currently stands at 51 million tonnes, according to the exchange.
