Crop planting in Western Canada 92 percent complete

Warmer-than-normal temperatures in Alberta and western Saskatchewan allowed for good seeding progress to be made by producers, according to the Canadian Wheat Board.

The planting of the various grain and oilseeds crops in western Canada was estimated at 92 percent complete, the CWB said Monday (June 1) in a crop update.

Seeding operations were nearing completion in both Alberta and Saskatchewan while producers in Manitoba were the furthest behind in those operations.

Scattered showers in parts of southern Saskatchewan and central Alberta did little to improve overall soil moisture in dry areas, the CWB said. Rainfall is urgently needed in west-central Saskatchewan and eastern Alberta.

In southern Manitoba, cooler-than-normal temperatures and moderate rainfall continued to delay seeding.

Across the Canadian prairies, warm weather is now needed to boost germination and emergence of crops, the CWB said.
