British Columbian beef test positive for brucellosis

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has quarantined two farms in British Columbia after three beef cows tested positive for brucellosis at a US slaughterhouse.

Brucellosis was last detected in cattle in Canada in 1989. It can cause undulant fever in humans, according to the CFIA, but cases are rare.

The USDA has placed temporary import restrictions on cattle from British Columbia, according to the CFIA website. Animals on both farms have been placed under quarantine while investigators test for brucellosis. The CFIA will further trace the movements of other animals from both farms.
