US making headway with animal identification system
The United States Animal Identification Organization reported that it is making headway with the development of a nationwide tracking system for US livestock.
The USAIO database is a producer-controlled, multi-species solution for livestock producers participating in the National Animal Identification System.
While producers retain ownership of their data at all times, state and animal health officials have access to the data only when necessary for animal health surveillance.
The limiting factors on that development so far have been the inability to allay concerns of participants, said beef IRM coordinator Jim Akers.
USAIO intends to create a system that provides valuable and timely information to enhance disease surveillance, while addressing the concerns over confidentiality, Akers said.
Akers added that clarity and understanding would bring about participation and the development of technology and infrastructure.
