Canada's cattle producers anxious of new US legislation

Days after the 10-year anniversary of BSE in northern Alberta, Canadian cattle producers are worried about the effects of the new US legislation.

The US avoided the World Trade Organization deadline to change the discriminatory actions of the Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) requirements; instead they furthered the restrictions on cattle crossing the border.

Alberta Beef Producers' Doug Sawyer says this hurts everyone, "If we are not able to move our beef products south and reciprocating bringing beef and beef cattle north on the eastern seaboard, that's going to add costs - shipping costs and add costs to the consumers."

The Canadian Cattle Producers estimate around US$640 million will be lost as a result.
