Swine, poultry woes cut Philippine soymeal imports

Imports of soymeal, used as an ingredient for animal feeds, are expected to contract this year due to production problems facing the domestic hog and broiler industries, according to a report by the USDA attache in the Philippines.

A resurgence of disease-related problems and the extreme heat brought about by the El Nino weather dampen feed demand by the local hog and broiler industries, the report said.

However, imports of soymeal are projected to increase in 2011, due to an expected recovery of feed demand.

Soymeal imports dropped 15% to 1.1 million tonnes from 1.3 million tonnes the previous year, and are expected to dip further this year, the report added.
