Taiwan reports new FMD outbreak in pigs
Taiwan's veterinary authorities have sent an immediate notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) dated May 25 about a new outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in pigs.
The authorities reported sub-clinical FMD in Yanou Township in P'ing-Tung County in southwestern Taiwan. Out of 13,176 pigs, 280 were tested positive for FMD during a routine surveillance testing on May 18. The 57 farms which are within the three-kilometre zone are under quarantine and close surveillance but no further cases have been detected yet.
The last outbreak of FMD in Taiwan was in April 2009.
