Denmark allowed to import only salmonella-free eggs
The EU has allowed Denmark to require all egg imports to be free of salmonella, according to the Copenhagen Post.
EU health authorities have approved a Danish application for 'special status' that will ensure all egg imports are guaranteed by distributors as being 100 percent salmonella-free.
Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Eva Kjer Hansen said the approval is a breakthrough, and that Denmark would also be seeking special status for chicken imports.
According to the national disease control centre in Denmark, 3,700 people in the country suffered from salmonella-related illnesses in 2008 and that four people have died of salmonella poisoning since October.
