China sees rewards from high-quality wheat cultivation technology
China is reaping yields as its 22 core technologies for high-quality wheat cultivation over the past six years have helped turn out an immediate revenue of RMB 1.97 billion (US$238 million).
According to Zhang Fengtong, director of the Science and Education Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, the technologies were developed under a program initiated by the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance in 2000 and have been applied to 10 million hectares of farmland.
This program, "Agricultural Technology Jump Plan", has involved 14 pilot projects so far. The technologies and supported technological items have increased the per-hectare wheat output by more than 750 kilograms and brought in extra revenue of RMB1,500 or US$181.
