US recalls and bans JBS beef products

Beef products from JBS SA's Lins plant in Sao Paolo have been recalled and barred from further entry into the US.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that the 87,000-pound of beef products being recalled are distributed through the Sampco Inc. facility in Chicago.

The recall of12-ounce cans of Libby's Corned Beef and 35-pound boxes of Seasoned Cooked Beef was initiated following a routine sampling.

Since March 15, samples of cooked beef products from the Lins site returned 12 instances of a level of Ivermectin exceeding the tolerance level established by USDA. Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medication, and the health risk is classified as low.

The unit would not make further shipments to the US until it was determined how meat with excess Ivermectin entered the supply.

JBS is promoting a recall of the products and will analyse them to clarify any problem.

Financial impact on the firm will likely to be negligible, the company said, adding it will be able to shift other plants to US export operations while Lins continues to serve other markets.
