Corn and soy planting still behind average in South Dakota

South Dakota farmers made significant progress with corn and soy planting before stormy weather over the weekend, but planting remains behind, according to the USDA.

The department says in its weekly crop and weather report that 34% of the soy crop is in the ground, compared with the five-year average of 42%. Currently, 77% of the corn is planted, compared to the average of 84%.

Planting of spring wheat is wrapping up, and 48% of the winter wheat crop is in the boot stage, up 20 %age points from the same time last year.

Most of the cattle and sheep in South Dakota are rated in good to excellent condition, and feed and stockwater supplies are rated mostly adequate to surplus.
