Pakistan to invest US$12.64 million for livestock growth

 


The government of Pakistan made a PKR 1075.97-million (US$12.64-million) proposal for the ongoing development projects of livestock and dairy sector under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2010-11.


The objective of the projects is to enhance meat production to fulfill the domestic requirements as well as to export it. Official sources said the total cost of the projects is PKR 16913.765 (US$198.86) million.


For strengthening livestock services for livestock disease control in the country and eradication of rinderpest across the country, it has also proposed an allocation of PKR 8.053 (US$0.09) million in the PSDP 2010-11 against the total estimated cost of PKR 1992.66 (US$23.44) million.


The government has proposed an allocation of PKR 169.072 (US$1.99) million for aquaculture and shrimp farming for the progress and development of the sector whereas an allocation of PKR 241.912 (US$2.85) million goes to milk collection, processing, dairy production and development programme across the country.


To improve reproductive efficiency of cattle and buffaloes in small holders' production system, the government has proposed in the PSDP 2010-11 an amount of PKR 40.399 (US$0.48) million to enhance the productivity for eliminating the poverty of small scale farmers. The total estimated cost of the project is PKR 495.15 (US$5.82) million.


It has also proposed to allocate PKR 68.406 (US$0.80) million for the upgrading and establishment of animal quarantine station across the country against the estimated cost of PKR 336.085 (US$3.95) million.
