US feed grain consumption increases by 18 percent

The total feed grain disappearance in the US is projected at 354 million tonnes in 2007/08, up by 18 percent from 301 million tonnes in 2006/07.

The increase stems from higher food, seed, and industrial use (FSI), feed and residual use, and exports.

Record ethanol production is driving most of the increase in FSI.

FSI in 2007/08 is projected at 118 million tonnes, up from 94 million tonnes in 2006/07.

US feed grain exports are projected at 72 million tonnes, up from 58 million tonnes in 2006/07.

Total US feed grain supply in 2007/08 was up 53 million tonnes from the 337 million tonnes available in 2006/07.

The feed grain production in 2007/08 was up 71 million tonnes over the previous year, mainly because of the record-high corn crop. Imports are expected to total 3 million tonnes.
